Let me explain to you why diagnosing and treating the muscle imbalances in your body will make such a difference to the results you are probably use to getting from your doctor or therapist.
In case you hadn't realized it already, the conventional medical approach to treating pain is to mainly focus on symptoms. Taking anti inflammatory drugs or pain killers, stretching your stiff joints or strengthening your tight muscles with exercise, are the more common solutions being prescribed for someone with back pain.
But this does not address what is really important… treating the cause of the pain, which nearly always starts quite some time before the pain strikes
You see every time we are upright, sitting or standing, we are supporting the weight of gravity. This is a weight that is trying to push us down to the floor but we use our muscles to resist that pressure and stay upright.
When our muscles are out of balance, it means the muscles on one side of the body are stronger or pulling harder than those on the other side. This makes it very difficult to keep our structure and joints symmetrical as we carry our body weight throughout a long day.
The result is our structure ends up twisting or sagging as the diagram below demonstrates, and our muscles can 'SET' in the wrong position and eventually become dysfunctional.
Notice it's the full body that gets affected, not just an isolated area.
This is what causes pressure to develop in and around our joints, such as the spine, hip, ankle or knee joints and, as we move around, inflammation and pain often follows.
The more time we spend upright, especially if there is extra compression from running or jumping around when on our feet, the more pressure that is applied to the various joints.

point though, there are some things you need to know about and follow through
on, including:
Diagnosing the cause of your pain.
Probably one of the most confusing things for back pain sufferers is all the different diagnosis they get from the various therapists they see.
I am sure you have had a number of varying opinions about why you have your pain but am I right in assuming none of it was backed up by you becoming pain free.
For me, finding a solution to a persons back pain or sciatica involves mostly logic. As stated earlier, you are carrying the weight of gravity around all day, of course if your body isn't balanced, sooner or later one of your joints will become inflamed or damaged from the pressure it's under.
The difficulty is getting the body back into balance, especially if you are just focusing on one area at a time. There is no logic to stretching an isolated part of your body or strengthening one area like your abs or core and doing nothing anywhere else.
How many therapists who worked on you paid extra attention to your legs? If you answered none, that is one very good reason why you still have pain for a start. The legs are a major consideration for me when I'm fixing someone's back pain or sciatica.
If the muscles in one leg are tighter and more contracted than the same muscles in the other leg, the pelvis will be tilted or rotated to one side. This is a common cause of many back problems making working on the legs a crucial part of any treatment.
You can easily be taught ways to diagnose exactly which muscles are the real problems and contributing to your pain. It is not ok to generalize, you need to know which muscles to target more intensely with either stimulation or release techniques.
Understanding the things that can make a body tight.
One of the first things you want to do when you have back pain is get rid of the tightness and increase your flexibility. My guess is you have been given lots of stretches to do over the years and although you tried, they never really gave you any lasting benefit.
That's because stretching doesn't work. It's what I was taught and after 20 years that is what I've found also.
It is not just about pulling tight muscles this way and that, or adjusting the spine 25 times and everything will magically come right. That only works on a small percentage of people, especially those new to pain whose body manages to compensate for it's imbalances, from those treatments.
The real cause is never gone, just buried for a time until it eventually surfaces again in the future as a more persistent pain.
There are many things in a persons lifestyle that contributes to their body becoming stiff and tight, from the muscle imbalances we have spoken about, to what you eat and drink.
Part of the holistic healing approach required to achieve a long lasting result requires you look at all these things and address all the ones that are working against you.
Not only fix your pain but prevent it from coming back.
I don't believe in doing things by half, you need to remove the cause of the problem from your body and take the pattern of imbalance away so the pain is no longer lurking below the surface waiting for a wrong move to bring it back.
I probably won't be telling you anything you didn't already know when I say that most treatments for back pain, costing big dollars, will only target symptoms and at best provide temporary relief.
It might be a month, a week, a day or not even an hour before the symptoms return and your life is on hold again.
If you are serious about getting long lasting relief for your pain you need to treat your body holistically. Dealing with the physical, emotional and chemical imbalances all together gives a person much faster and more effective results.
Because most treatments don't do this properly, people end up living with their pain much longer than is necessary.
Putting everything together
to fix your own body is not a difficult thing to do, but it is a
process that needs to be understood and carried out the right way
if you are going to achieve the desired result.
Understanding the muscles and how they got into this condition.
As said, your muscles are likely to be the key to your problem and so as part of the process of taking your pain away you need to understand how your muscles work and how they will respond to any stimulus you apply to them, good and bad.
It is important so you can make the right choices for yourself in day to day life. Will you accept that offer of a round of golf or a bike ride, based on where you are at with your recovery or at that particular time, with your fitness and energy levels etc.
As luck would have it, the muscles are very predictable and if you understand exactly how they work and respond, you will have a much easier time deciding on what your best course of action would be at any given time
For example if you feel pain coming on, is it best to do some self treatment techniques, apply heat and rest or do some exercise. There is a right answer to this question based on your circumstances at that time and the logic that works so well with the body.
There is no magic cure for Back Pain or Sciatica.
Anyone who tells you they have a magic cure for your back pain is probably more interested in your money than your health.
Back pain (including sciatica) rarely just appears one day from nothing only to disappear the next with a set of stretches or exercises, even a pill or a prayer.
It takes time for a muscle imbalance to spread throughout the body and a reason your stress levels to have risen to the point of causing chronic back pain or sciatica. When it is chronic, it takes time to reverse those changes and lock in long lasting relief.
That is not to say it is a particularly difficult task for most people, just a process that needs to be understood and followed over time.

Many approaches to treating back pain only look at it from one perspective. A chiropractor manipulates the spine, a physiotherapist prescribes stretching and exercises and a doctor prescribes drugs and considers surgery etc.
As is often the case, where there is a combination of more than one thing contributing to a persons pain, the single approach treatment will never work because it is only dealing with a small part of the problem.
Once it is explained to you what to look for, often the best person to decide what issues need to be dealt with and put the whole treatment program together, is the pain sufferer themselves, because you know your body better than anyone else.
When the right information and guidance on what to consider is provided, often a far better result can be achieved with self treatment or self management.
After all, who is the person most passionate about seeing your pain gone?
Even if you have been told you need surgery.
People who have structural damage that shows up on a scan or X Ray are often wrongly convinced nothing can be done for their pain past drugs and surgery.
How is any manipulation, stretching or exercise going to help a degenerated joint or a pinched nerve right?
The truth is studies have shown, more than once, there are plenty of people over 50 walking around with degeneration, bulging or herniated discs and other structural problems... but NO pain.
Even if you have structural damage to your back or believe your case is too difficult to fix with self treatment, you will be very surprised at what getting your muscles looser, stronger, healthier and more balanced can do to take pain away.
